J.J. Abrams to take on King’s Dark Tower

It seems Stephen King’s epic seven book adventure, The Dark Tower Series, might finally be finding it’s way to the Big Screen and it looks like the architect of this massive project is going to be none other than J.J. Abrams!

Beginning with The Gunslinger released in 1982, it took King 22 years to complete his masterpiece that proved to be the backbone of his entire universe with many of his other books referencing the Dark Tower in one way or another.

The story follows a gunslinger named Roland who is attempting to find the Dark Tower and defeat the Crimson King in a crumbling post apocalyptic alternate universe. Over the course of the series Roland finds himself with several traveling companions. The core group being Eddie and ex-junkie, Susannah, who starts out with multiple personalities and a young boy named Jake.

A rumor posted on wikipedia lists Christian Bale as the “top contender” to play Roland, but who knows how reliable that news is.

The story incorporates many genres including western, science fiction, fantasy and horror.

Transforming these books into a series of films is a serious undertaking that should only be done by someone who has the energy and passion to do it right.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, King is hoping a filmmaker with a strong vision can help the process along. The author is a self-professed fan of Lost and Abrams.

If it’s true that Abrams is going to be undertaking this massive project, it won’t begin until after the series finale of Lost so we’ve still got a long time to wait.

  1. I really like Christen Bale…but as Roland? Eddie maybe (Though Doubtfully) James Cavel would be a much better choice. or even Viggo Mortensen. I just cant see bale as an ancient sole. which is exactly what Roland is
