Oscar winner Adrien Brody lobbied hard for the lead and will now star in the reboot of the Predator franchise.

Brody will play the heroic mercenary who battles Predators in a project being spearheaded by Robert Rodriguez: a project he wrote some fifteen years ago for Fox. The final script is co-written by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch, whose Medieval script was the talk of Hollywood earlier this year.

Other actors announced for the project include Alice Braga (I Am Legend), Danny Trejo (Desperado, and the upcoming Machete – another Rodriguez project), Walt Goggins (“The Shield”), Oleg Taktarov (former UFC fighter, 15 Minutes), Mahershalalhashbaz Ali (“The 4400″), and Louiz Ozawa.

Nimrod Antal (Vacancy, and the upcoming Armored) is directing.

Production is about to commence on location in Hawaii and at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

Fox has set the film for release July 9, 2010.

If the reboot proves successful, Brody has signed options to return for sequels.

The casting of Adrien Brody is an interesting choice, I’ll say that much. Much like Nicolas Cage who did The Rock and Con Air after winning his Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas, Brody has flirted with the idea with being an action hero. He tangled with King Kong, now he’ll try his luck against Predators. I hope the reboot proves successful. I made the point to avoid the Alien vs. Predator films because of the PG-13 rating. Thankfully Predators brings back the hard R, restricted rating.
