Not to be confused with Frank Miller’s graphic novel, Ronin, 47 Ronin is a remake of the 1941 Japanese film called Genroku Chushingura.
Chris Morgan, of Fast & Furious and Wanted previously, penned the screenplay. Keanu Reeves has the staring role in a film that is based on a true story which recounts the most famous case involving the samurai code of honor, bushiko or “Way of the Warrior.” Reeves would play one of the samurais who sets out to avenge the death of his master.” [THR]
The film had yet to attract a director, but Carl Rinsch, who was in the running to helm the “Alien” prequel, just may be the guy.
He comes from a commercial background, having directed spots with futuristic themes for Mercedes and Heineken. Not sure how he’ll fare crafting a samurai picture with that guy who thinks he knows kung fu; but I’m willing to take a chance on Rinsch after watching a few of his commercials. Yes, they have a futuristic aesthetic, but when I watched this one, I thought how it could be applied to action scenes involving Ronin.
According to writer Morgran, 47 Ronin “is this great, Gladiator-esque, 300-like big action movie with samurai and ninja.” I take that to mean a lot of green screen and airbrushed six-packs for this Universal Pictures production.
Ummmm…..yeah……cause Keanu Reeves just scream samurai.
I’m sure it’s going to be just as authentic and true-to-life as Tom Cruise being “The Last Samurai.”
